Sex workers go to the school

In Bangkok's main red-light district, Patpong, I hoped to find anything but a school. On top of the girl bar “Super Pussy,” around 50 sex workers attend a class about the International Women´s Day. They also learn languages, cooking or dancing.
“Who knows the origin of this date?," says Chantawipa Apisuk “Noi”, founder of Empower, an NGO that fights for the dignity of the known as the oldest profession in human history. The students, attentive and considerate, look at each other until one of them raises her hand and answers.
As soon as I crossed the door, one of the girls gave me a glass of water and a box with around 100 condoms. Later, I spoke with one of the Patpong sexual workers. She looked at my bracelet, which I got in a Temple, and told me that she likes to go to practice meditation.
Contrary to other organizations that want to stop prostitution, Empower advocates for them to work in a good and healthy environment. The NGO was founded in the 80´s, when aids was striking Thailand, to advocate condom use.
Noi, a small and vibrant woman, says that she started working with sex workers as she could have done with any other discriminated group.
Empower does not ask for the same rights that prostitutes have in Holland, where they have social security. In Thailand, not many enjoy fully social coverage. “In Thailand, only 10 percent of the population contributes to the social security system”.
Noi ("little" in Thai) is proud of the path she has walked. At first, no one paid attention or took Empower seriously, but now she is invited to international conferences on aids or human trafficking all over the world.
No prostitute in Empower told me they were proud of their job, but they were not intimidated either because of morals. Their slogan: “Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go anywhere”
